Luke Conod shares some expert tips to help you dress for your goal weight this year. Buying a couple of key “wishlist” items can help provide the motivation you need to stick to your diet - despite all the temptation that surrounds you.

With 2019 in full swing and February being a make-it or break-it month for New Year’s resolutions; we’re taking a look at how losing weight and dressing for the body you want can go hand in hand.  

More often than not, New Year’s resolutions tend to focus on a lifestyle change, whether you’ve decided you will be dropping the few pounds you might have picked up over Christmas or you’re taking part in the marathon you’ve always wanted to do. Whatever the driving force behind your decision to make a lifestyle change, and lose the weight of 2018, we know you can always use a bit of extra encouragement.

Everyone is different, and we each find motivation in a variety of ways, for example some people tape pictures of their goal weight to the fridge while others may have a mantra that they repeat to themselves in the mirror each morning. Then there are the men and women that dress for the weight they want not the weight they currently are.  This form of motivation is commonly referred to as dressing for your goal weight.

In case you aren’t familiar with the idea it’s a very simple concept,  a goal weight wardrobe is where you update your current wardrobe and fashion style in accordance with your goal weight. For example if you are a size 16 and want to slim down to a satisfactory size 12, you’ll buy clothes that are a size smaller, say, a size 14. The idea behind buying a “goal weight wardrobe” is that the smaller sizes encourage you to lose the weight. This method of motivation is also often used to help men and women drop those last pesky pounds that always seem the hardest.

We have scoured the internet and found some of the best tips for creating your goal weight wardrobe, in a bit to help you avoid some of the common pitfalls that might occur as you take your weight loss journey.

Baggy is not better - ditch the big clothes

For the fuller figured among us, the temptation to hide our size with flowing tops, drapey fabrics and baggy jerseys is often overwhelming. However, the more we try to hide with the oversized sweatshirts, the more we draw attention to the areas in question.

We also find comfort in the larger sized items in our wardrobe, in part because they fit us before we’d lost the weight.  Not only do they provide us with the all important confidence boost - you know what we’re talking about, that wonderful moment just after you’ve pulled the zipper up you notice that gap between your skin and the waistband.

 

Don’t buy too much, too quickly

While the temptation to buy all the new items you desire as soon as your diet starts is definitely there, this could spell disaster for your wallet and your wardrobe alike. When buying your goal weight wardrobe it is a good idea to take a two-fold approach to it.

Part 1: Set yourself a goal or a time limit, for example dropping two sizes in six months. Rather treat yourself to an item here and there such as a pair of pants a size smaller or a top that you *will* be wearing by the time the six months is out.

The fact is: you don’t know what size you’ll actually be at the end of your dieting journey, so it’s prudent to hold off on this front for a little while and see where your diet takes you.

Keeping our advice in mind as you burn a trail through your favourite shopping centre or high street shops will save you money in the long run, meaning you’ll have a lot more in the bank to make that treat-yourself purchase - whether that’s a designer jacket, an eye-catching dress or a high-quality nicely fitted shirt.

Part 2: For every new item you add to your cupboard donate another two to charity or turn them into rags that can be added to the cloths under the sink. This will help you stay motivated to reach your goal weight and shop up a storm.

 

Allow for fluctuations in weight

Bringing your weight down to a desired level isn’t a simple process, and your progress might not be as fast or as smooth as you would like it to be before you reach your ‘goal weight’.  

Don’t fret about this, as it’s totally natural and a regular part of any weight-loss journey. Just as we all have good Mondays and bad Mondays we have good diet days and bad diet days.  Allowing for slight fluctuations in your weight, and understanding that when weight is lost slowly there is more chance of keeping the weight off in the long run, is the key to a happy future, so make sure you purchase some new clothes in a range of fits around your target size, so you’ll look good even if your weight is fluctuating or you’re not losing as much as fast as you would like.

If you don’t make such allowances and you find yourself at a different weight than your target, you might feel like the clothes you wear at this size will feel like a punishment - which is a feeling that could scupper your whole diet process.

Also remember that we are all unique: each person’s weight loss journey is different and will run at different speeds, so if you and your partner, best friend or sibling are taking this journey, be sure NOT to compare yourself to them as this will hinder more than help.

 

Try Something New

Don’t be afraid of trying something new, whether it’s emulating co-worker’s casual Friday look or trying something you’ve seen in your favourite magazine, be brave. Don’t forget that as your body changes you will need to feel comfortable in your new skin and your new threads.

Even if you don’t want to commit and actually buy *that* one outfit you would never ever have dreamed about buying, at least try it on.

And don’t be afraid of colour, you don’t have to swathe yourself in black to look and feel slimmer, go for colours that will compliment your skin tone and eye colour. This is especially important to remember on those days we feel a bit despondent, a pop of colour can do wonders to pick us up out of a funk. If you feel good, you look good.

 

Accessorize Well

If you achieve your goal weight a little faster than others always remember that a good quality accessory, such as a belt will be a life saver, it’s perfect for holding up trousers that have suddenly become too loose around the middle or cinching in the waist of your favourite dress - belting your clothes will also help you feel comfortable with your new shape and give you a well-deserved confidence boost!

 

Treat yourself

Once you’ve arrived at your goal weight, it’s time to treat yourself with a new fashion purchase that epitomises the new you.  For men, our advice is to opt for a crisp, high-quality pair of jeans or Chinos. A great fitting pair of trousers (denim or otherwise) can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, and are about as far from fad fashion as you can get. For women, a stylish new dress for a red-letter occasion is arguably the perfect way to celebrate. The moment you first slip on those new clothes will be a landmark moment, so make sure you invest in high-quality, designer brands to make the moment extra special.

Always remember that you are the most important person in your world, so push the boat out when buying your new dress, but always be mindful and don’t break the bank. If you want to put a little bit of money aside every month you meet a new goal weight, it doesn’t have to be half your salary each month - it could be as little as £5 per pound lost and when you’ve reached your goal weight, you’ll be able to buy that new outfit completely guilt free!

So, whether you use clothes as your prime piece of motivation or you prefer to make your treat purchase once you’re at a stable weight, your wardrobe can form a key cornerstone of your weight loss journey. Just make sure that your goals aren’t negatively impacting your overall wellbeing and you’re sure to make a success out of any new diet.
